Bone Health: Calcium and Vitamin D essential partners at every stage of life

BBT03071

Bone health is the result of a complex balance involving diet, lifestyle, and preventive care. In this context, calcium and vitamin D are an essential combination. Despite their importance, intake of these nutrients is often insufficient, and deficiencies can contribute to bone fragility and the onset of related conditions such as osteoporosis, which affects approximately 5 million people in Italy.

In addition to contributing to proper bone mineralization, calcium plays a role in other essential functions such as muscle contraction, blood clotting, and nerve transmission. Since the body does not produce it, it must be obtained through diet or, when necessary, through supplementation. In adults, the daily requirement is approximately 800–1,000 mg, but this can vary depending on age, sex, and health status: for example, it increases in adolescents, the elderly, and pregnant or breastfeeding women, where it can reach up to 1,200 mg per day.

Vitamin D plays an equally crucial and complementary role by promoting the intestinal absorption of calcium; it is also involved in normal muscle and immune system function, making it important to ensure an adequate intake.

Among the main risk factors associated with a deficiency of these two elements and the resulting bone fragility is certainly age, with bone mineral density decreasing progressively over time. However, there are other factors to consider as well.

Calcio IBSA, a new dietary supplement based on calcium citrate, is now available, a form of calcium that is highly bioavailable and generally better tolerated by the gastrointestinal tract than calcium carbonate. It adds to the cholecalciferol (vitamin D) formulations already in the company’s portfolio, rounding out IBSA’s commitment to the field of Bone Health and the development of cutting-edge solutions for bone health.
