Peyronie's Disease is a condition that many men deal with silently and with embarassment, often without knowing what it is: well known to specialists but still barely known to most people. Characterized by the presence of plaques, it is a chronic condition that can cause pain, curving of the penis, and erectile dysfunction.
According to international literature, the prevalence of the disease varies between 0.7% and 11% of the adult male population, with a peak in the 50–60 age group . The national data is not dissimilar: in Italy, a multicenter study estimated a prevalence of 7.1% in men between 50-70 years old. The disease can also occur in younger patients under the age of 40, with a reported prevalence of between 1.5% and 16.9% partly because many patients tend to avoid consulting a doctor due to embarrassment or cultural stigma. Today, for the first time, a hyaluronic acid-based treatment for the acute phase of the disease is available in Italy, marking an important step forward in the clinical management of this condition.
